To me, bubbles represent a metaphorical lifecycle – holding a fascination for young and old.
In 1991, captivated by the amniotic sac, the original “bubble”, I wanted to recreate its delicacy, transparency and containment. Having explored glass, wax and gelatine as mediums, I moved to ice and began constructing installations. At the time, I began making bubbles with barbed wire as a fun exercise in irony. My obsession with the bubble was born.
In 1993, impressed by the work of Rebecca Horn, I started making bubble machines with light projection, capturing the refraction. 27 years later, I’m still mesmerized. There is a sense of loss when a bubble pops but also a simple cycle of regeneration when we re-dip the wand and recreate another experience.
